The care and thoughtfulness with which he created an elevated menu and took us through a culinary journey with regional context was truly wonderful. I am gluten free and Mateus made some incredible gluten free bread and cake that allowed me to experience Portugeuse classics that are quite difficult to get elsewhere in Lisbon. My wife is pescatarian and was able to enjoy traditional dishes that were made deliciously vegetarian. The menu was 5 courses, plated beautifully, and accompanied by a starter drink and wine throughout. Overall, I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for an intimate and delicious experience!

The event room in the hostel was delightful. Mateus and Marcos greeted us warmly and showed us to our seats. We were seated next to different parties and were welcomed with a white port cocktail which was absolutely delightful. The table setting was very nice and I really loved how the starters were already placed on the table. I loved the bread and butter. The bread was homemade and warm. Then Mateus welcomes everyone and explained every course. They give everyone time to eat each course and talk with each other. The meals change so I am not going into detail into my meal as yours will likely be different.
M&M share their life story with us and how they came to Portugal and cooking career. It’s so meaningful to see someone live out their dream and be able to take part in the journey. The care, presentation, food, and hospitality are all important to Mateus and Marcos.
If you’re concerned about the dinner being hosted at a hostel, don’t be. It’s a lovely room with great ambience. There are two large tables. Ours had 10 and the other was similar.
We surprised my friend with a little birthday treat and M&M were so wonderful about including that at the end of the dinner with song and candles!
We definitely recommend this experience if you want an unforgettable evening going on a tour of Portuguese cuisine without all the walking. 😉
