In Lisbon, the best way to reach a place is not always the route with the fewest stops on the map. A short walk may hide a steep climb; a tram ride can take longer if there is a queue. Combining public transport with manageable walks, one area at a time, often makes for a better day.
Ambiente Hostel is on Avenida Almirante Reis, between Anjos and Arroios. Save the Ambiente guest app: its transport section has practical information, and its routes offer ideas for one, two or three days. This guide helps you choose how to travel without repeating our Lisbon Airport arrival guide.
Metro: a useful starting point for longer journeys
Anjos station is on the Green line. Check the official station page for entrances before setting off, particularly with luggage or if you need to confirm mobility arrangements.
Inside the station, check the line and direction shown on the signs. Do not choose simply by the colour of a train or a station name you remember. When changing lines, follow the interchange signs and keep your ticket or card until you leave.
Normal Metro hours are 06:30–01:00, but individual entrances can have different hours. Check the official timetable and service information and allow time for your final connection rather than aiming for the last possible moment.
Tickets, a navegante card and contactless are different things
A transport card is the carrier; the ticket or balance loaded onto it determines your journeys. Before paying at a machine, think about your day and read the full name of the product you select.
For a Metro journey, you can pay directly with a contactless bank card, following the official guidance. Each passenger needs their own card or device and must use the same one to enter and exit. Do not enter with a physical card and try to exit with your phone.
If you will combine transport types, compare occasional tickets. The 24-hour CARRIS/Metro ticket runs from first validation; it is different from the version that also includes CP trains. See CARRIS ticket conditions for current prices and the coverage you need. Paying for one Metro ride with a bank card does not automatically create an all-operator day pass.
For a fuller comparison of tickets, zapping and passes, see the MyLisbon guide to Lisbon public transport.

Trams and buses: check the destination and validate
A tram can be part of the experience, but it is also everyday transport for residents. If a large queue is waiting, consider another connection or a walk rather than spending a good part of your day in line. The route number and destination are more useful than simply looking for a traditional tram.
For buses, check the direction at the stop: the vehicle across the road may travel the opposite way. Consult the CARRIS journey planner and service changes before relying on a particular connection.
Validate your ticket or transport card when boarding, even if you have used it before. Check the validator’s response; CARRIS validation information explains how to confirm registration. Onboard purchase arrangements vary, so check the operator’s options rather than assuming cash is always accepted or that the fare matches a ticket bought in advance.
Walking: consider hills as well as distance
Combining two or three nearby visits usually works better than crossing the city repeatedly. Look at the route and terrain, not just the distance. Wet paving, stairs and heavy bags can change whether walking or public transport feels comfortable.
Leave time for a break and save the hostel’s location. If you are tired, take transport one way and walk only the part you want to enjoy. Our Lisbon in three days itinerary helps spread out your visits rather than fitting everything into one afternoon.

Would you prefer a guided introduction?
A guided walk can help with your first bearings. On Explore Lisbon, you will find a partner’s Best of Lisbon tour: confirm its meeting point, date and conditions before booking. This is a separate activity, not a substitute for a Metro or CARRIS ticket.
Activities are provided by the operators shown. Partner links may earn Ambiente a commission at no extra cost to you.
