Free museums in Lisbon: what to visit and what to check

Ideas for exploring Lisbon’s museums without paying for every stop, with practical notes about free entry.

It’s possible to explore history, archaeology, and culture in Lisbon without buying a ticket for each stop. The important thing is to distinguish between three situations: free entry for everyone, free visits with reservations, and discounts or exemptions that only apply to residents. An outdated list might mix up these rules and lead you to a ticket office with incorrect expectations.

These suggestions focus on the city center and work well as a complement to a stroll through the Baixa district and the riverside area. Before heading out, always check the opening hours on each venue’s official website.

1. Money Museum: a free visit in Baixa

The Money Museum is located in Largo de São Julião, near Praça do Comércio. It’s an option for those who want to add a cultural visit to the historic center without dedicating an entire afternoon. Admission is free, according to the museum’s official information.

The theme allows us to look at money beyond its value in our pockets: forms of exchange, history, and its relationship with society. Check the Money Museum for opening hours, activities, and access conditions. Free entry does not mean that all special activities require registration.

2. Casa dos Bicos: archaeology on the ground floor

Casa dos Bicos is striking for its facade and is located in an area easily combined with the Sé Cathedral and Alfama district. The archaeological section of the Lisbon Museum, on the ground floor, has free admission.

This rule should not be confused with access to other spaces or exhibitions of the José Saramago Foundation in the same building. Confirm what is included in the visit to the Casa dos Bicos section and check the Lisbon Museum tickets if you wish to visit other sections.

3. Rua dos Correeiros: a guided tour that requires reservations.

Beneath the Baixa district lies another Lisbon. The Archaeological Center of Rua dos Correeiros allows visitors to discover vestiges from different eras on a guided tour. The Millennium bcp Foundation offers free visits, by appointment and subject to confirmation.

This is the perfect example of a free visit that you shouldn’t treat as free entry at any time. Book on the official website of the archaeological site and check the language and availability. If there are no vacancies, keep your tour of the Baixa (downtown area) and choose another visit for that day.

It combines a cultural visit with sightseeing, without filling your day with travel.

“Free on Sundays” is not a general rule.

Free museum admission depends on the institution and may require residency in Portugal or the Lisbon municipality. The 52-day free entry pass for Museums and Monuments in Portugal is intended for residents of the national territory. It is not an automatic free pass for any foreign tourist.

There are also specific conditions at municipal museums and other cultural venues. Check the required documents and rules on the tickets for Museums and Monuments in Portugal. In the case of MUDE, consult the museum’s website instead of following old lists that always present it as free.

A cultural morning without complications.

Choose the Money Museum as your main visit, stroll to Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square) and continue towards Casa dos Bicos (House of Points). If you have a confirmed visit on Rua dos Correeiros (Correios Street), organize the rest of your itinerary around that time. You don’t need to enter all three places to have a well-spent morning.

On rainy days, remember that other visitors may have the same idea. On sunny days, alternate indoor activities with a break by the Tagus River. Occasional closures, capacity limits, and schedule changes may occur even when entry is free.
